What is Desserto®?
Desserto® is a highly sustainable vegan biomaterial developed in Mexico as an alternative to leather. It is created from cactus and other organic renewable compounds.
The cactusplantation matches biodiversity and blends with wild flora. The harvesting techniques used stimulate the microflora and microfauna in the ground which are maintained without damage, and wildlife findsa favorable environment that provides food.
Desserto®is certified by the USDA asbeing 61% biobased and is working towards becoming 100% plant based. The companyhas also beenawarded with the USDABioPreferred® Program Champion Badge
Cactus has a great CO2 sequestering capacity. From the Desserto® plantation’s 14 acres, 8,100 tons of CO2/year are absorbed, while only 15.30 tons of CO2 are generated annually.
Irrigation systems are not needed for the production of Desserto®,since cacti grow with rain water and earth minerals. It only takes 200 liters to grow one kilogram of cactus biomass with the water that is naturally absorbed by the plant itself from humidity present in the atmosphere.
End of life
Desserto® materials are biodegradable under anaerobic thermophilic conditionsand can be either chemically or mechanically recycled.
